At the start of the year I did a post titled 2015. In this post set out a number of aims for the year under different headings. Well I though it was time to look at how I am doing on these goals as the middle of the year approaches. Some of these goals at the time seemed overly optimistic and I did think that maybe some would never be achieved. Others were very important to me personally. So sitting back and taking what will be my first assessment and revisit of them and in public will be interesting.
So here we go. I will put the aim for 2015 first in a blockquote and comment on it after.
First comes Eastlit. I hope to see Eastlit not only continue to expand in readership, but also introduce some new options. Among these I would like to introduce at least a few downloadable e-magazine versions made from previous issues. I also want to see the successful integration of Southlit into Eastlit as a regular insert. So at the end of 2015 I will be checking on the following as far as Eastlit goes:
- Increased readership
- Downloadable e-magazines
- Southlit inserts
- +32% January
- +11% February
- +9% March
- +10% April
- +8% May (still incomplete)
So we are looking good with this one!
There has been no progress here yet. So I need to do more in the remaining 7 months.
Well the first one of these came out in Eastlit February 2015. There has been a Southlit Supplement in every issue of Eastlit since. So this one is completed.
Second must come work. AUA Korat still has a way to go to be a successful small English language center. I will be looking at a more efficient set up and at least similar course numbers. This is going be an ongoing challenge especially in the location the branch is at. The test at the end of 2015 must be:
- An ongoing operation
- Student numbers at least matching those of 2014
- Increased efficiency
An Ongoing Operation
Well without going into company workings things are looking OK right now after 5 months. This can only be judged by years end though. The solidifying of Conversation and Writing classes and the quick success of the new Writing Online are all positives.
This is going to be a difficult one to achieve with the declining Thai economy and confidence. It is also impossible to assess before year’s end with a different term structure that does not mirror last year’s one. So verdict out on this.
It has already been possible to improve efficiency in terms of staffing and costs, so this one is completed.
Next there are personal projects. One I want to get back to quickly is improving on my raw conversion of files to e-books. Right now for text I have managed a raw conversion that allows 95%+ accuracy. This is good enough for free downloadable versions of Eastlit. However, I am sure there is a potential commercial future in this with conversion approaching 99%+ especially if including pictures, tables, etc. And like a cook who never reveals their recipes I am certainly not going to reveal the settings or programs I am currently using that can change raw files into e-books in a matter of minutes. This is especially true considering that already the output is producing better results than most free e-books and also many that people are paying for.
Other projects include some extra work on online learning and my writing. I probably have enough material now for an online writing course, and may do this as a work operation to help support AUA Korat. I also have effective software available already although the work website will need extensive changes to get it up to speed. That will be a challenge. I seem to blow hot and cold on my writing, but hope to at least knock out a few short pieces this year and maybe make progress on my autobiography and novel. It seems easy enough thinking about it now, but is more than I managed in 2014 and it is is easy to underestimate convenient excuses!
So to sum up on what I will be looking for in personal projects at the end of 2014:
- Improved raw e-book conversion
- At least a modest online writing course
- Progress in my writing on:
- Some short pieces
Improved Raw E-book Conversion
This has not progressed although it cannot be a priority with the quality of the process already developed. Still works needs doing here.
Well almost by accident I am running a trial of this at work and it looks like being a winner. So this one can also be described as completed.
Progress in my Writing
There has been very little progress here except for a little in the novel and a short story. It can be described as ongoing.
Family and Life
I have probably left the most important to last. 2014 has not been the best of years with us having as a family to live apart for the whole year. The aim in 2015 is to once again get back together. That however cannot happen for at least the first third of the year as Lena needs to finish school (March) and know what university she will go to in August. That means in reality, Lena will only be with Jeab and I for a few months this year. That however, will be a great time and great way to send her off to university later in the year. That will leave Jeab and me as a middle aged couple to once again enjoy life together. I am looking forward to that.
One good thing in 2014 was losing weight. It seems easy when living alone! I definitely intend to keep the weight down as with it comes a body that just feels so much better and younger. This year the resolution is to cut alcohol intake. It isn’t exactly very high now, but it feels like a good thing to do. And it would also be nice to get back t0 the increased level of exercise (one hour a day 3-5 days a week) that I was doing in 2013.
Oh and I fully intend to get back to playing that guitar more than in 2014!
The aim for 2015 is to drastically improve family life and all round life as much as possible.
- Get the family back together
- See Lena go to university
- Work on health and fitness:
- Keep the weight to current levels
- Cut the booze
- Exercise a little more
- Play the guitar more
Getting the Family Back Together
This is complete. It was done in April. Getting us all back together has to be my best achievement this year and probably cannot be bettered.
Lena to University
Well everything is ready. She is accepted and we just await mid-June before she goes. Another great achievement and one that is not down to me!
Health & Fitness
Weight is down a little. Alcohol consumption is down. And I have started exercising more and getting out on the bike over dirt tracks and farmland. This is ongoing but progressing very nicely.
Strumming on the old guitar has made a comeback and while not daily does occupy several days a week.
2015 is already looking a good year in terms of personal achievements. In fact I am starting to think that I set the bar too low!
