I woke up today to find I had been offered a free but upgraded from normal zapier account. It got me thinking that these services that create links between unconnected apps may be the way to go. Zapier and IFTTT are basically IT management services that allow you to create links between different apps so that they integrate. The idea is that this will allow automated workflow between applications developed by developers and simplify the IT demands on us trying to set up online. There are plenty of reviews of both services out there that are easily searchable for more information. In the last few weeks I have been looking at how to set up a small but mostly automated online course that has no technical hurdles for a student to overcome or weird places to sign in or apps to use that students do not use in their everyday life already. That quickly became a problem. However, it was fairly obvious that it was possible to do by combining or linking software/apps. That however involved a bunch of work and maybe too much for the outcome. Could it be that Zapier (or competitor IFTTT – If This Then That) is the answer? I will be giving both a try. It also seems that the potential of such automation services is going to see growth in supply of them, so things will hopefully be getting better as time goes by. And surely more and more apps will be available to integrate by such services. It is not often an application or service interests me much but these ones certainly have. I will be doing a follow up post on this if anything worthwhile comes from my playing around with them. Cheers Graham
