Well Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a good New Year’s Eve, and are now looking forward to 2015. It is pretty hard to predict what a year holds, but I am sure most people would hope for fairly similar things. These usually include health, happiness, prosperity and improvements in study or work. However for me I am going to try and be a bit more specific and then at the end of 2015 see how it went.
First comes Eastlit. I hope to see Eastlit not only continue to expand in readership, but also introduce some new options. Among these I would like to introduce at least a few downloadable e-magazine versions made from previous issues. I also want to see the successful integration of Southlit into Eastlit as a regular insert. So at the end of 2015 I will be checking on the following as far as Eastlit goes:
- Increased readership
- Downloadable e-magazines
- Southlit inserts
Second must come work. AUA Korat still has a way to go to be a successful small English language center. I will be looking at a more efficient set up and at least similar course numbers. This is going be an ongoing challenge especially in the location the branch is at. The test at the end of 2015 must be:
- An ongoing operation
- Student numbers at least matching those of 2014
- Increased efficiency
Next there are personal projects. One I want to get back to quickly is improving on my raw conversion of files to e-books. Right now for text I have managed a raw conversion that allows 95%+ accuracy. This is good enough for free downloadable versions of Eastlit. However, I am sure there is a potential commercial future in this with conversion approaching 99%+ especially if including pictures, tables, etc. And like a cook who never reveals their recipes I am certainly not going to reveal the settings or programs I am currently using that can change raw files into e-books in a matter of minutes. This is especially true considering that already the output is producing better results than most free e-books and also many that people are paying for.
Other projects include some extra work on online learning and my writing. I probably have enough material now for an online writing course, and may do this as a work operation to help support AUA Korat. I also have effective software available already although the work website will need extensive changes to get it up to speed. That will be a challenge. I seem to blow hot and cold on my writing, but hope to at least knock out a few short pieces this year and maybe make progress on my autobiography and novel. It seems easy enough thinking about it now, but is more than I managed in 2014 and it is is easy to underestimate convenient excuses!
So to sum up on what I will be looking for in personal projects at the end of 2014:
- Improved raw e-book conversion
- At least a modest online writing course
- Progress in my writing on:
- Some short pieces
Family and Life
I have probably left the most important to last. 2014 has not been the best of years with us having as a family to live apart for the whole year. The aim in 2015 is to once again get back together. That however cannot happen for at least the first third of the year as Lena needs to finish school (March) and know what university she will go to in August. That means in reality, Lena will only be with Jeab and I for a few months this year. That however, will be a great time and great way to send her off to university later in the year. That will leave Jeab and me as a middle aged couple to once again enjoy life together. I am looking forward to that.
One good thing in 2014 was losing weight. It seems easy when living alone! I definitely intend to keep the weight down as with it comes a body that just feels so much better and younger. This year the resolution is to cut alcohol intake. It isn’t exactly very high now, but it feels like a good thing to do. And it would also be nice to get back t0 the increased level of exercise (one hour a day 3-5 days a week) that I was doing in 2013.
Oh and I fully intend to get back to playing that guitar more than in 2014!
The aim for 2015 is to drastically improve family life and all round life as much as possible.
- Get the family back together
- See Lena go to university
- Work on health and fitness:
- Keep the weight to current levels
- Cut the booze
- Exercise a little more
- Play the guitar more
OK those are the specific aims for 2015. I fully intend to revisit and assess them at the end of the year.
